Is Where I Live In Danger Of Being Hit By A Tsunami?
4 out of 5 tsunamis occur in the ‘Ring of Fire’. The ‘Ring of Fire’ is the region that surrounds the Pacific Ocean. This region has some of the most active tectonic plates in the world. So if you live on the coast of one of one of the countries in the ‘Ring of Fire’ then you could be in danger of a tsunami. You could also be in danger of a tsunami if where you live has lots of earthquakes.

How To Predict a Tsunami is Coming
The following things may be an indication of an impending tsunami (should these signs occur trust your instincts and evaluate to higher ground immediately if necessary):
Note: If any or all of these signs occur, evacuate immediately (as quickly as possible, every second counts) to higher ground away from the coastline. Take valuable possessions with you as well as loved ones if possible.
The following things may be an indication of an impending tsunami (should these signs occur trust your instincts and evaluate to higher ground immediately if necessary):
- If an earthquake occurs near the coastline evacuate IMMEDIATELY.
- All the fish in a nearby reef may suddenly disappear.
- A loud rumbling sound in the distance.
- Loud sirens on the coast lines or near large water bodies (in the Japanese tsunami everyone ignored the sirens because they could only see small ripples in the water, a few minutes later the entire town was under water).
- Strange currents that can pull boats in a nearby large body of water.
- All the water at the beach receding in a matter of seconds and then coming back just as quickly (tides behaving strangely in short periods of time e.g. in 1 minute the water has receded back 20-30m).
- Animals behaving strangely and similarly to the outlined behaviours in the prediction of an earthquake.
- The ground may shake.
- If you are diving and you have no control over your body because the currents are too strong.
